Sustainable urban development

Since the founding almost 50 years ago by Toshin Development of a major shopping center in Japan, in Futakotamagawa, we have operated under the same basic strategy: the development of commercial facilities that starts from the creation of the location in which they will be placed, with an eye to the long-term urban development.

Today, we are faced with momentous changes in the macro environment, including changes in the weather and conversation of the Earth’s environment. The past understanding of SC, “a place to shop,” is now starting to be reframed as the “what they can offer apart from for shopping;” in other words, how they can maximize utilization of the location of the facility and provide time and spatial value.

The range covered by SDGs is exceptionally large, and there are many issues tackling such large undertakings, meaning that it is vital to focus on areas in which our own qualities and assets can be leveraged. We believe that utilizing our strengths and undertaking SDGs with appropriate determination will lead to an increase in the value of our company. We have therefore raised the concept of a smart community that reveals and revitalizes locality as our vision for sustainability, and as a result selected the domain in which we will be active.

Basic thinking concerning SDG undertakings

The philosophy held by Toshin Development regarding SDG undertakings can be distilled into the following three keywords.As a company, we have an innate forward-looking spirit, seek to provide a quality, stable consumption environment, always put the locality first, and believe in coexistence, co-prosperity, and mutual trust. These three terms therefore represent the attitude that we take in the face of SDG undertakings.

Serendipity

We will create opportunities, stimulation, and unexpected encounters, and realize cultural exchanges of the highest quality. This is also an element of the environmental appeal of SC, which exists as an urban retail facility.

Resilience

We will embed within a region qualities and systems that enable multifaceted physical and mental resilience. The idea here is to revitalize the surrounding environment in a safe, secure, and sustainable manner.

Tolerance

We will expand the tolerance of environments and activities, making them richer and more mentally healthy. This is the foundation for “well-being:” a life that is fulfilling both physically and mentally.

In accordance with our basic thinking behind SDG activities, we are aiming to overcome diverse modern issues, leveraging our qualities as a developer and the wonderful nature of unique places such as a city or region, to create a “smart community” that increases the overall happiness in society.

Three key themes of creating a
smart community

Toshin Development has set three themes as the domain for SDG undertakings that leverage our qualities as a commercial developer.
Based on these themes, and with complex linkage of the seventeen goals of SDGs, we will attempt to maximize revealing and revitalizing the locality of the regions in which each facility is located, seeking to create sustainable urban development.

Realization of a “clean & green” living environment for humans

We are focusing on the use of clean energy and the establishment of green infrastructure. Our SC provides the visitors with a commercial place powered by clean energy, including 100% usage of electricity derived from renewable energy sources, and the use of systems such as dry mist and ice thermal storage devices. Furthermore, we arrange our facilities and the surrounding environment full of foliage and greenery characteristics, thus creating an environment for visitors to enjoy the verdant nature while we communicate our message of perseveration of the Earth’s environment.

Centered on SC, we are working with those living in each region and our tenants to realize a sustainable society (zero emissions). In order to create a zero emissions system that produces the absolute least amount of waste, we have implemented a “rescue deli” for employees in order to reduce food loss, and conducted support and educational activities targeting local children’s cafeterias and food bank organizations. We are also giving consideration and implementation to ways in which SC can aid in creating a sustainable society, such as educational activities to reduce plastic waste through the medium of art, and the reuse of kitchen wastewater.

Promotion of changes in society; making it more universal, less stressful, and more eco-friendly

With an awareness of our role as a facility located in the heart of the city, we work with governmental organizations and the regional community in order to provide safety and security to that region. This includes fulfilling the role of a base of operations during an emergency, such as providing an evacuation site and taking in people who can’t return home when an incident does occur. Furthermore, we are working on removing barriers for persons with disabilities and introducing AI navigation app to allow everyone visiting our SC to have the most welcoming time. We seek to contribute to the creation of infrastructure that leads to an easy to live in town.
