Continuing to create Mind Symbols while living alongside each region

Toshin Development was created for the purposes of full-scale suburban shopping center (SC) development and operation as an offshoot of Takashimaya. After the opening of the Tamagawa Takashimaya SC in 1969, we have mainly been focused on the development and operation of SC centered on department stores, such as the Kashiwa Takashimaya Station Mall and Singapore Takashimaya SC. We currently have seven SC with a core department store located across Japan and overseas and have become a vital source of competitive energy for the Takashimaya Group. As our secondary period of business, we have also created the Nagareyama Otakanomori SC, advancing branding of a new type of city through development methods that take advantage of the historic nature. The Japanese market can be considered mature at this point, so here the challenges we face will be continuing to polish the quality of our facilities while transitioning to next generation SC capable of sustainable growth.

On the other hand, overseas markets still hold enormous potential for future growth. Vietnam is one particularly striking example. Since we established our representative office there in 2008, we have worked on large-scale urban development as a comprehensive developer, that not only covers commercial facilities but also offices, residential housing, and educational facilities.

The 60 years since our founding and the environment surrounding SC have both greatly influenced our position within the Takashimaya Group. During recent considerations of our continued growth into the future, we have redefined the vision we should be striving to achieve, and the missions we should undertake to achieve it. We have done more than create simple SC facilities. We have shown love for the regions in which we operate, respected nature, history, and culture, and worked over extended periods with our stakeholders to create pillars of support for the community. The term “Mind Symbol” has been incorporated into our new operating philosophy to represent this approach. It’s also a declaration of our intent to continue to create such “Mind Symbols” that make the people living in a region, the people working there, and even the people only visiting think “I want to live here” and “I want to go here.”

One of the key elements to achieving this is to contribute to regional society as a community center. We are working so that, in the future, our facilities will play more than the role of shopping centers for enjoying buying and eating, but also the role of regional social infrastructure that makes full use of the location of each facility. One thing is for sure: Toshin Development will continue to stand alongside the residents of every region in which we operate.
