A place for meetings with the new and old.
Aiming to be the top meeting place in Kyoto.
Kyoto is where Takashimaya was founded. The Kyoto Takashimaya store, which first opened as a used cotton merchant in Karasuma Matsubara in 1831 and has been in business for more than 190 years since, was reborn in 2023 as Kyoto Takashimaya SC with the addition of the specialty store zone [T8].
The concept for [T8] is a place where visitors can come to meet with many people and things, new and old. Along with modern art, the Japanese subculture that's so popular around the world, and top-flight entertainment, we have brought together unique specialty stores with the theme of "meeting." There is a total of 51 stores, including those taking residence in a commercial facility and appearing in the Kansai region for the first time.
We were especially aware of how [T8] contrasts with a department store. Rather than an extension of existing department stores, we wanted to create some "noise," in a positive manner, between this place and a department store, realizing a place that can be enjoyed by both new and existing customers. We use unique designers for each floor, with the five floors between B1 and 4F featuring environments designed around various concepts and created by three elite architects.
With the entirety of the department store and specialist store [T8] zone, we are aiming to become an anchor point for the city and the top meeting place in Kyoto.
