Town planning born from co-creation

The Nagareyama Otakanomori area, blessed with verdant nature, became the closest woodland city to the center of Tokyo with the opening of the Tsukuba Express (TX) in 2005. We agreed with the vision raised by Nagareyama City—the restoration of the forests and green town planning—and so started development in the Nagareyama region under the concept creating of a woodland town center.

We aligned our viewpoints with the involved stakeholders in the region, ensuring everyone is facing the same direction, and aiming to achieve the kind of city created when everyone fulfills their required role.

  • Realizing and enriching the Nagareyama lifestyle

In spring 2007, we opened the Nagareyama Otakanomori SC, aiming to realize the so-called "Nagareyama lifestyle" that combines easy access to the capital with calm living in the suburbs. Taking key tenants such as Takashimaya Food Masion, a cinema complex, and lifestyle goods specialty stores, have done a great job proposing a rich version of the Nagareyama lifestyle.

Since the opening of the main SC building, we have proceeded with ongoing development of the surrounding area to further meet the varied needs of the people who live, work, or visit the region. Over the span of about 15 years, we have developed a total of ten facilities with varying characteristics, from commercial facilities to offices, medical, and educational facilities, bringing new appeal and energy to this woodland town.

  • Town planning in step with government

We worked alongside Nagareyama to renew the plaza in front of the station under the concept of it becoming the "town's living room." It is now loved by local residents as one of their potential "third places," and has been landscaped to create a unity with our other facilities that surround it. Furthermore, in order to revitalize the plaza and create further energy we have been handed management of it by the city. We hold periodic markets and events in the space.

We have also concluded a Comprehensive Cooperation Agreement with Nagareyama City, with the intention of sharing our management resources to improve the services offered to citizens. As well as functioning as a disaster prevention center, supporting the safety and security of the community in the event of an emergency, the SC will also cooperate in a variety of other arenas, such as support for the child-rearing generation and the promotion of culture and art.

  • A node that creates the flow of the town

Another of the characteristics of the Nagareyama area is the development that makes use of the space beneath the Tsukuba Express elevated track. In 2018, space for storage beneath the elevated track was developed into the Kokage Terrace, creating a flow that allows people to cross between the previously separated north and south sides of the track. Furthermore, the botanical garden Green Path that opened in 2022 turned the space beneath the elevated track into a place of soothing greenery, functioning as a hub that connects all the facilities in the surrounding area.

The Nagareyama development is still only 15 years old. We will continue to create places that make people feel that they want to live there, and want to visit there, be it 50, or even 100 years into the future.
